What Is Open in Athens on Sunday?

Many stores in Athens are closed on Sunday, but not all of them. So, what can you do in Athens on a Sunday?

Shopping

Ermou Street, Near Chabad, and Other Stores in Tourist Areas

From May through October, except for the second Sunday in August, many stores are also open on Sundays, although not all of them.

Designer Outlet Athens & Smart Park, Near the Airport

Designer Outlet Athens is open on Sundays throughout the year.

Smart Park, an open-air shopping centre located next to it, is open on Sundays from May through October.

Jumbo

Several Jumbo branches are open on Sundays from May through October.

The most accessible branch by public transportation from the Chabad House area is the Acharnon branch.

The closest branches by taxi from the Chabad House area are Kolonos and Pangrati.

Shopping Malls

Shopping malls such as The Mall Athens, River West and Athens Metro Mall are closed on Sundays, except on special shopping Sundays listed below.

Chabad House, Kosher Restaurants and Kosher Grocery Store

The Chabad House, kosher restaurants and kosher grocery store are also open on Sundays, according to their opening hours.

On the eve of Jewish holidays, opening hours follow the Friday schedule.

On Jewish holidays (similar to Shabbat), holiday prayers and festive meals are available by advance registration only. The kosher restaurants and grocery store are closed.

Please note: Outside Israel, Jewish holidays are observed for one additional day compared to Israel.

During Chol Hamoed (the Intermediate Days) of Sukkot, the week before Passover, Chol Hamoed (the Intermediate Days) of Passover, Erev Tisha B'Av and Tisha B'Av, opening hours may vary. Please contact us in advance to confirm opening hours and available services.

Supermarkets and Grocery Stores

Most large supermarkets are closed on Sundays, but some stores remain open.

The AB supermarket on Mitropoleos Street and the Carrefour supermarket on Asomaton street, both not far from the Chabad House, are open on Sundays throughout the year.

Some neighbourhood supermarkets and grocery stores are also open on Sundays. To find one nearby, search Google Maps for “supermarket near me” and filter the results by “Open now.”

Museums, Archaeological Sites and Attractions

Most museums, archaeological sites and major attractions in Athens are open on Sundays.

Good to know: From November through March, admission to government-operated museums and archaeological sites is free on the first and third Sunday of every month. This offer does not include every museum. The Acropolis Museum, for example, is not included.

Public Transportation

Public transportation also operates on Sundays, although services generally run less frequently than on weekdays.

Pharmacies on Sunday

Most pharmacies are closed on Sundays, but on-duty pharmacies operate in every area. To find an open pharmacy, click here:

Good to know: At 82 Ermou Street, there are vending machines selling basic pharmacy products, available 24 hours a day.

Other Days When Stores Are Closed

  • January 1, with some stores also closed on January 2
  • January 6
  • March 25
  • Orthodox Easter Sunday and Monday. Stores have reduced opening hours on the preceding Friday. These dates often fall during the final days of Passover or shortly afterwards.
  • May 1
  • August 15, with some stores also closing on additional days before or after
  • October 28
  • December 25 and 26

Good to know: The extent of the closures is not the same on every date. On January 1, during Orthodox Easter, on August 15 and on December 25, almost everything is closed. Closures are also widespread on May 1 and December 26. On the other dates, there is a better chance of finding small stores and minimarkets open.

Special Shopping Sundays – Most Stores Are Open

Several Sundays throughout the year are designated as shopping Sundays, when stores and shopping malls are open. To find the dates for the current year, search Google for “open Sundays Athens” together with the current year.

  • The first two Sundays of the winter sales period, in January
  • The first Sunday of the summer sales period, in July
  • The Sunday before Orthodox Easter
  • The Sunday following the last Friday of November
  • The two Sundays before December 25
  • The last Sunday of December
