A kosher Olympics
Jews planning to attend next month's Summer Olympics in Athens will have no trouble obtaining kosher food, thanks to the initiative of Rabbi Mendel Hendel, the Chabad-Lubavitch representative in Greece.
Hendel has rented facilities at 4 Normanou Street in the picturesque Monastiraki neighborhood, which will serve as a Jewish information center during the Olympics and house Kol Tuv Glatt Kosher, a restaurant being launched for the occasion. The eatery, which opens its doors August 1, will offer boxed meals that can be taken along to the games, as well as Shabbat meals, all of which will be prepared by a professional Greek chef. Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be served, and the restaurant will be open from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.
"Keeping kosher is not just about the foods one does or does not eat," Hendel said. "But about a disciplined way of life that creates community, strengthens identity, and ultimately lends itself to richer involvement in the greater experience of living Jewish. When people are away from friends, family, and the community that serve to affirm their identity," he added, "it's keeping kosher that helps them maintain a Jewish identity, no matter their surroundings."
